‘For those familiar with the work of Louis de Bernieres through some of his previous novels – Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, Birds Without Wings and The Dust that Falls from Dreams,it will come as no surprise that this little book of only 133 pages was very enjoyable.

Blue Dog is a prequel to his novel Red Dog which was made into a movie a few years ago.  It’s a simple but evocative story of a young boy’s struggle to come to terms with the unexpected death of his father and the subsequent illness of his beloved mother. Young Mick was sent from the city to live in the Pilbara with his grandfather and was introduced to a new and strange way of life, new people and a different culture.  Exploring the relationships in de Bernieres’ simple but witty style transported me to the Pilbara where I accompanied Mick on his journey. I shed a few tears at the end and I am now going to read the sequel Red Dog as a matter of urgency.’

Blue Dog is available from the Oberon Library
